Optional Practical Training (OPT) for F-1 Students

√ Temporary employment must be related to the F-1 student’s major area of study.
√ There are two types of OPT:
√ Pre-completion - May work after being lawfully enrolled on a full-time for one full academic year at an institution that has been certified by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
√ Post-completion - May work after completing studies.
√ Request the designated school official (DSO) at the institution to recommend the OPT.
√ File Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, filing fee, and supporting evidence with USCIS.
√ F-1 Status is for the duration of study.
√ OPT is end year of work authorization granted at the conclusion of the program - (must have completed at least one year of studies at an accredited university).
√ STEM OPT: If you have earned a degree in certain science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, you may apply for a 24-month extension.
√ Spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21 can join the F-1 student.
√ Dependents will be granted the same period of stay as the H-1B1 worker.
√ Spouses and children cannot work, but may do part-time study and volunteer work if there is no compensation.
