Humanitarian Relief for Lebanese Citizens Continues Through November 2026
Temporary Protected Status (“TPS”) for citizens of Lebanon has been automatically extended by six months through November 27, 2026 because the Department of Homeland Security was unable to make an informed decision whether the country continued to qualify for TPS status at least 60 days before it expired on May 28, 2026.
TPS is a humanitarian program that allows nationals of designated countries to live and work lawfully in the United States when conditions back home, such as armed conflict, natural disaster, or other extraordinary circumstances, make return unsafe. Lebanon was first designated in November 2024 amid armed conflict and instability along the Israel-Lebanon border, and the current extension preserves the same eligibility terms for six more months.
The agency’s inability to make a decision was due to leadership changes at the agency. Lebanon's designation was due for review by March 28, 2026, but Secretary Mullin had been sworn in only four days earlier, and DHS has said the unsettled conditions in Lebanon required a fresh country assessment before any determination could be made.
For current beneficiaries, the effect is reassuring but narrow. Anyone already holding TPS under Lebanon's designation keeps it through November 27, 2026, so long as they remain eligible, and Employment Authorization Documents issued under that designation stay valid through the same date with nothing further to file. The extension does not open a new registration period or reach anyone not already covered.
We will continue to monitor the agency’s eventual determination on Lebanon and share updates as they become available.
