Guidance on How to Correct I-94 Admission Records

With summer fast approaching, many of you may be planning international travel. As a reminder, after each international trip, please make sure that your Form I-94 Arrival Record is in order by downloading your Form I-94 here.

If you can’t locate a record of your admission on this website, you should contact the Customs and Border Patrol's ("CBP") Deferred Inspection Site closest to where you entered the United States to have them update their records to show your admission. You can find a list of Deferred Inspection Sites here.

CBP also can make mistakes on the Form I-94, especially around expiry dates. Fortunately, these are easy to correct. If CBP made a mistake on your Form I-94 record, you should contact the CBP’s Deferred Inspection Site closest to where you re-entered the United States to have the Form I-94 corrected.

For those traveling on H-1B or L-1 visas, please be sure to present your current Form I-797 approval notice so that the CBP officer does not issue an I-94 with a shorter expiration date based on your visa sticker. It’s best to review the Form I-94 record as soon as it is available so that any mistakes can be corrected before the admission period ends. If the mistake is discovered after the Form I-94 has expired, please contact an immigration attorney to discuss strategies for correction.
